Factor Storage
Clotting factor concentrates are critical to have on hand. Handle them with care by following these instructions:
- Carefully read the package insert inside your box of clotting factor. Every box of factor has an insert that explains how your specific product should be stored and used.
- Some clotting factor concentrates must be stored in the refrigerator at temperatures between 2° and 8°C (36°F – 46°F). If not stored in the refrigerator, factor may lose potency.
- Other factor concentrates can be stored at room temperature (up to 25°C or 77°F) for short periods of time. This may be up to 3 to 6 months depending on the specific factor product you use. After this time, factor may begin to lose potency.
- Keep track of how long a vial has been out of the refrigerator.
- Do not expose factor to freezing temperatures or temperatures above 25°C (77°F). If frozen, bottles could be damaged, compromising sterility. If exposed to heat, factor activity could be lost. When traveling with factor, keep it in a cooler with ice.
- If you think your factor has not been stored properly, talk to the staff at your HTC or home care company. Do not discard any factor on your own.
- Store supplies needed for infusing factor (syringes, needles, etc.) in a clean, safe place where children will not be able to get into them.
- Discard used needles and supplies in an approved sharps container. Be sure this container is also stored in a safe place, out of reach of children and pets. Do not throw these containers in the trash. They must be picked up by a qualified person from your home care provider or, if you are using mail-in containers, you may drop them off at your post office.
- Talk to your HTC staff or homecare provider if you have any questions.
