Travel Letter for Bleeding Disorder Patients

Coram is pleased to provide a Physician Travel Letter for bleeding disorder patients while they are away from home. The letter notifies the appropriate person(s) that the traveler has a bleeding disorder and they will need quick access to their clotting factor if needed. The letter can be downloaded and completed by the patient's physician in advance of a trip.

  • Physician Travel Letter for Self-Infusing Patients
This letter is for the traveler who is capable of infusing themself
  • Physician Travel Letter for Caregivers
This letter is for the traveler who is NOT capable of infusing themself, but will have a parent or caregiver assist with their infusion.

Travel Checklist

The following is a handy checklist to help you determine what needs to be done before going on a trip and what to take with you.

One Month Before You Leave

  1. Find where you can get treatment along the way and at your destination. Your HTC can help with this.
  2. Download one of the above travel letters.
  3. Check on your supply of factor. Factor and supplies can be shipped to your destination if needed, but you will need to let your homecare supplier know at least two weeks in advance.
  4. How will you store the factor?
    • When Flying: put in cool pack with freezer packs and carry it on with you.
    • When in Car: place in cooler with plenty of freezer packs.
    • When in Hotel: get a room with refrigerator.
  5. Check your medical insurance: does it cover you while away from home? Contact your case manager for this information.
  6. Contact Coram if nursing will be needed at your destination.

What to Pack

  1. Medical insurance ID card
  2. A doctor’s letter about your hemophilia
  3. Factor and a carrier to keep it cool
  4. Infusion supplies — it never hurts to pack a few extra
  5. A small Sharps disposal container. Contact Coram to request one if necessary.
  6. A list of hemophilia treatment centers in travel area. Contact your HTC for this information.
  7. Crutches, splints or braces if needed

Have a safe and stress free vacation!
