Transitions by age Transitions by Age

5 to 8 Years Old

During this time period, children start seeking their independence and their social activities increase. If your child is not yet on home infusion, begin learning more about it with your HTC. If you are already infusing at home, help your child get more involved in setting up for the procedure. At this point in your child’s development, he should know what type of bleeding disorder he has, and education should continue in a way that he or she can understand. Your child may also have an increased interest in sports. This is fine, but remember to check with the HTC staff to find out what activities are safe and appropriate.

Some other tips for this transition period:

  • Plan an educational session for school personnel. Work with your HTC staff and home care provider for assistance.
  • Start attending hemophilia camp and continue to participate in programs at your HTC and NHF chapter.
  • Use safety equipment for bicycling, skating and other sports.
  • Help your child learn good habits about bleeding episodes, such as early versus delayed treatment of a bleed.
  • Set and maintain expectations regarding chores and homework.
