Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and related disorders are caused by the absence or inactivity of an essential blood clotting protein, or “factor.” Classic hemophilia is characterized by delayed or deficient clotting of the blood, resulting in episodes of prolonged bleeding, usually into joints, muscles and internal organs. Modern treatment of bleeding disorders consists of prompt intravenous factor replacement therapy. Though the affected population is small, factor therapy for each patient with hemophilia averages more than $130,000 per year.
